He called both Kartikeya and Ganesha and proposed a challenge: whoever could complete a journey around the entire Earth and return first would be married first. On the other hand, Ganesha, riding his humble mouse, chose a different path. Recognizing the deep spiritual significance of his parents, he circled Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati, declaring them his entire universe. When Kartikeya returned and discovered that Ganesha's marriage had already taken place, he was deeply upset. भगवान शिव ने दोनों पुत्रों से कहा कि जो भी संपूर्ण पृथ्वी का सबसे तेज़ी से भ्रमण कर वापस आएगा, उसी का विवाह पहले होगा। यह सुनकर कार्तिकेय ने तुरंत अपने वाहन मोर पर बैठकर पूरी पृथ्वी का भ्रमण करने के लिए यात्रा शुरू कर दी।

दूसरी ओर, गणेश जी, जो अपने वाहन मूषक पर थे, उन्होंने अपनी बुद्धिमत्ता का उपयोग किया। उन्होंने संपूर्ण पृथ्वी की परिक्रमा करने के बजाय अपने माता-पिता की परिक्रमा की। गणेश जी का मानना था कि उनके माता-पिता ही उनका संपूर्ण ब्रह्मांड हैं। उनकी इस भक्ति और बुद्धिमत्ता से भगवान शिव और माता पार्वती प्रसन्न हो गए और उन्होंने गणेश का विवाह पहले तय कर दिया।

कार्तिकेय का क्रोध और मल्लिकार्जुन की उत्पत्ति

जब कार्तिकेय पृथ्वी का भ्रमण कर लौटे और यह देखा कि गणेश का विवाह पहले हो चुका है, तो वह अत्यंत क्रोधित हो गए। वे खुद को अपमानित महसूस करने लगे और कैलाश छोड़कर दक्षिण दिशा में एक पर्वत पर चले गए।

माता पार्वती और भगवान शिव अपने पुत्र कार्तिकेय को मनाने के लिए उनके पीछे गए। जहां कार्तिकेय रुके थे, वही स्थान मल्लिकार्जुन के नाम से प्रसिद्ध हुआ। भगवान शिव ने वहां ज्योतिर्लिंग के रूप में विराजमान होकर भक्तों को आशीर्वाद देना शुरू किया।
