Today's story is about Lord Shiva. Before we start the story, let's understand what Shiva means. Shiva means auspicious, well-being, and liberator. Those who govern the life force are called Shivaatma. Those who control the air are called Sada Shiva, the pure soul. Those who govern life are called Parama Shiva. Once upon a time, the Devtas and Daityas churned the ocean with the desire to obtain nectar. The first thing that emerged from the churning was the most poison, Halahala. The dreadful nature of Halahala caused all living beings to become anxious about their existence. If Halahala spread its toxic effect among living beings, how would Brahma's creation survive? Not only living beings, but no creature among Devtas or Daityas – aquatic, terrestrial, or aerial – would survive. Even the fertility of the lush green earth would be destroyed forever. आज की कहानी शिवजी पर है कहानी शुरू करने से पहले चलिए समझते हैं कि शिव का मतलब क्या ?

शिवका अर्थ ही मंगलमय, कुशल-क्षेम और मुक्तिप्रदाता है। जो प्राणोंपर शासन करते हैं, वे शिवात्मा कहलाते हैं। जो वायुको वशमें रखते हैं, वे सदाशिव शुद्धात्मा कहलाते हैं। जो जीवनको वशमें रखते हैं, वे परम शिव कहलाते हैं।

एक समयकी बात है, देवों और दानवोंने अमृत पानेकी इच्छासे समुद्र-मन्थन किया। मन्थनमें सर्वप्रथम सर्वाधिक विषैला कालकूट विष निकला। कालकूटकी भयंकरतासे प्राणिमात्र जीवन धारण करनेके लिये चिन्तित हो उठा। यदि जीवोंमें कालकूटने अपना विषैला प्रभाव दिखाया तो ब्रह्माजीकी यह सृष्टि कैसे बचेगी ? अब आगे भगवान शिव नीलकंठ कैसे बने
