रामायण के किशकिन्दा कांड में ये वर्णन आता है कि जब सीताजीकी खोज करते समय समुद्रको पारकर लंका जाना था, तब विशाल सागर की अपार विस्तार देख कर सभी वानर चिन्तित होकर एक दूसरे का मुँह ताकने लगे। अंगद, नल, नील आदि किसी भी सेनापति को समुद्र पार कर के जाने का साहस नहीं हुआ।

उन सबको निराश और दुःखी देख कर वृद्ध ऋक्षपति जाम्बन्त ने हनुमान्जी से कहा, हे पवनसुत! तुम इस समय चुपचाप क्यों बैठे हो?
